Annual income tax return in the Netherlands — what to know

Almost everyone who works in the Netherlands files an annual income tax return (aangifte inkomstenbelasting). The standard deadline is 1 May for the previous year. If you need more time, you can request an extension.

Who must file

If you received an invitation from the Tax Office (aangiftebrief), you are required to file. Even without one it is often worthwhile, as many employees are due a refund, for example if they worked only part of the year.

What determines the refund

The outcome depends on deductions (mortgage interest, part of commuting costs, donations), sharing with a fiscal partner and tax credits.

Documents you need

The main ones are the annual statement from your employer (jaaropgave), your BSN, your bank account number and details of any mortgage, children and assets.

Previous years

You can file up to five years back. If you did not file in the Netherlands in earlier years, check whether a refund is waiting for you.
