Allowances (toeslagen) — which ones you can get and how to apply

Allowances (toeslagen) are Dutch contributions that lower everyday costs. The Tax Office pays them out and you apply for most of them yourself.

The main allowances

  • Zorgtoeslag — contribution towards compulsory health insurance.
  • Huurtoeslag — contribution towards rent.
  • Kinderopvangtoeslag — contribution towards childcare.
  • Kindgebonden budget — contribution for children, depending on income.

What the entitlement depends on

Usually your annual income and assets (savings) determine whether you qualify. The limits change every year, so check the current amounts before applying.

Watch out for repayments

Allowances are paid in advance based on an estimated income. If your income rises, you may have to repay part of it. So report changes on time.

We help you work out what you are entitled to, submit the applications and keep track of changes, so you avoid unexpected repayments.
