Starting a business (sole trader) in the Netherlands, step by step

Starting a sole proprietorship (zzp, eenmanszaak) in the Netherlands is simpler than it seems. Here are the key steps.

1. Register with the KVK

You register your business with the Chamber of Commerce (KVK). You choose an SBI code that describes your activity.

2. VAT number

After registration the Tax Office issues a VAT number. Also decide whether the small business scheme (KOR) is worthwhile for you.

3. Account and invoicing

A separate business account and correct invoices (KVK number, VAT number and required details) make your administration easier.

4. Tax and administration

As an entrepreneur you file quarterly VAT returns and an annual return. Keeping proper records from the start prevents problems during an audit.
